Super busy moms! This is for you
Dr. Andrea Mills Uncategorized
Sometimes we have trouble setting appointments for kids to come in and get adjusted. The problem is their busy schedules.
I’ve had kids as young as age 7 stressed out about their schedule!
If you are a busy mom, I encourage you to unschedule yourself a little. Here’s a video I did about this.
Bored kids are creative kids. Kids today rarely have to think or figure things out on their own. Technology is right there helping them.
Moms and dads are driving themselves nuts working, getting kids to activities and then handling homework, dinner, bath time and bedtime.
Your nervous system doesn’t understand the difference between stress from a too-busy schedule or stress from something more dangerous. Stress is stress and that fight or flight state isn’t good for your health.
I encourage you to un-schedule yourself a little. Give your kids a break. Their brains don’t need to be working all the time. They don’t need to have every minute filled. Boredom helps inspire creativity and imagination.

Chiropractic vs Acupuncture
Dr. Andrea Mills Uncategorized
I get a lot of questions about chiropractic vs acupuncture; whether or not they’re the same, how they’re different. Are they complementary? Can you do both at the same time?
If you’ve been listening to me for any length of time, you know that chiropractic corrects spinal misalignments that affect how the brain communicates to the body.
Think about the electrical system of the body. When you look at your home, you’ve got a power source coming into the home. Wires carry that electrical power to all of your outlets and all of your light switches, and that makes things work. The source of the body’s power is the brain, and the messages are carried down the spinal cord, across the spinal nerves to all of your body parts and that’s how they get their energy.
A misalignment of the spine may interfere with those messages from brain to body. So by correcting misalignments of the spine, we are literally freeing up the electrical system of the body so that the messages can run across the nerves the way they’re supposed to, or across the wires the way they’re supposed to, on a physical level. We’re impacting the physical transmission of the nerve impulses.
Now acupuncture works on chi, or life force. What acupuncture does is it frees up the energy flow, but not from an electrical standpoint across the nerves. It’s more like that chi, or that life force, can get bound up in different areas along the energy meridians, and acupuncture frees that up.
Both chiropractic and acupuncture have many positive effects, and both chiropractic and acupuncture are effective.
So I hope this has been helpful on outlining chiropractic vs acupuncture. If you are considering seeing a chiropractor or an acupuncturist, I’d love to chat with you to see if we’d be a good fit. If it turns out that acupuncture is the right thing for you, I’ve got a couple of recommendations I can make. So feel free to reach out. Remember the consultation is always free. If you wonder if chiropractic vs acupuncture is the right route for you, I’m happy to help.

Types of Scoliosis – Dr. Andrea of Restoration Chiropractic in Calabasas CA

I want to talk to you a little bit about the types of scoliosis. There are different kinds of scoliosis, and whether or not they can be helped is going to depend on the type of scoliosis. First of all, let’s go over a couple of terms.
What is a scoliosis? The spine naturally curves. For example if you look at someone from the side, there’s a curve in the neck, and then an opposite curve in the mid back, and then another in the low back.
But if you’re looking at somebody from the back and their spine curves side to side, that’s not normal. That’s called a scoliosis. A term that you often hear in the medical community is idiopathic, and idiopathic just means we don’t know. So a lot of times, teenagers will be diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. And that means, “We don’t know why they have scoliosis.” I’m not going to get into the fact that there is a diagnosis with the word idiopathic, which means “we don’t know” in it. I think that’s stupid. I think if you’re going to diagnose something, at least give a reason; not “we don’t know why it’s that way”.
Physical reasons for scoliosis
Sometimes when a person is born they have a “hemi-vertebra” which means that rather than being square it is wedged on one side. And when it wedges, the bone above it will move off into an angle and that creates one of the types of scoliosis. The eyes have to be level with the horizon, so the spine will curve to make sure the neurology works the way it’s supposed to. We know why this scoliosis occurs, and it may be hard to correct.
Adaptation
We also may not want to correct it because that adaptation is a healthy sign. That’s the sign of a healthy nervous system. So if there is a wedge on a vertebrae and the spine is adapting to keep the eyes level with the horizon, we shouldn’t correct that. We should leave it alone because the body knows what it is doing. The exception is a very significant curve that is affecting the organs. If the organs are compressed due to the curvature, then that’s a different story.
Functional Scoliosis
A different type of scoliosis is one that starts from a misalignment of the pelvis or low back. That would be a functional curvature. It’s solving a physical problem in the body. That’s why it’s functional. So how do we help that?
If there is a misalignment at either the top or bottom of the spine, then we should fix the misalignment. Over time, as that balances out, the scoliosis will correct itself to some degree.
Helping Scoliosis
If your child was diagnosed with one of the types of scoliosis, we need to look at the whole picture. We need to look at their entire spinal health to see. Is the pelvis imbalanced? Is there an imbalance on the upper part of the neck? Do they have some sort of a wedged vertebrae, or some sort of a birth issue that is creating the situation? Because if that’s the case, then maybe we want to leave the scoliosis alone. But if it’s functional, absolutely we can solve it.
I had a couple of X-rays taken of me earlier this week. And I actually have a bit of a scoliosis with some rotation. That would be a functional scoliosis. I know my body is imbalanced. I’m focusing the next several months on balancing my body again.
The body is a living, breathing organism. The body is always adapting. It constantly changes. It adapts to the environment. And it solves problems that it runs into, and it is incredibly, incredibly smart. But it is not stagnant. It changes based on the stresses that you put it under. It changes based on how physically active you are. If your muscles are imbalanced, all of that stuff actually changes your physical structure.
To be healthy, you want a healthy spine, a resilient nervous system, and you want it to adapt the way it’s supposed to.
Be grateful, have fun, and love lots,

ADHD and Chiropractic – Testimonial from a Mom

Woodland Hills chiropractor discusses ADHD and Chiropractic. Hear one Mom’s testimonial.
Pediatric and family chiropractic office sees moms and kids of all ages. Moms choose us because they know a good brain-body connection is important for their family’s health!
Most people don’t think of ADHD and Chiropractic in the same sentence. If someone has a positive attitude towards chiropractic, it is usually for things like headaches, back pain, sciatica, pinched nerves, etc. Which is too bad, because chiropractic can help lots of things. Just to be clear, chiropractic doesn’t “fix” anything. But removing misalignments of the spine can help the brain talk to the body better; and that is always a good thing.
A gentle chiropractic adjustment can help take a child with ADHD and calm their nervous systems down. What would it be like to have the gas pedal pushed down in your car all the time? Not good, right? Your car would be revving in high gear all the time, and would be hard to control. In a person, this same concept applies. If your nervous system is in high gear, you’d be wired, have trouble concentrating, and difficult to calm down.
Does that sound familiar?
